Because of Israel’s sin, Abraham’s promise was about to fail. God could not bless other nations through the sinful nation Israel. Now, God planned to send a savior (king) who could save Israel from their sins and reign forever. David was chosen as the ancestor of this Savior. As we see here, God’s promise becomes clear and specific as it approaches its fulfillment. And it will stand despite human failure.
