* The scientific explanation for the Bible. Pros: It helps us to accept the historical reality of the incidents. Cons: It might dilute the transcendency of God’s power. We might put God under the law of Physics and Mathematics. The scientific approach is only helpful to strengthen our weak faith. It won’t generate faith, but only reinforces self-confidence and reliance on our reasons. Stick to the text, or you might miss God’s message.

CH 4: Israel Commemorates the Crossing

Q1. The Lord asked them to build a pile of stones from the Jordan River to remember their crossing of the river. Find four verses that emphasize it was God’s power.

V3, V5, v7, v9, v10. They were asked to pick up stones from the very place where the Lord’s ark was standing.

To remember the Lord dried up the Jordan River so that they might obey the Lord.

Q2. Those who came out of Egypt were circumcised in Egypt, but those who were born on the journey were not circumcised. Some of them were circumcised in Egypt, and some of them were not. Why did God ask them to circumcise AGAIN the whole congregation again?

Many of them were not circumcised. Some of them were circumcied in Egypt, who were older than 40. But, their circumcision was nullified by rebellion of their father generation. As they entered the new land, Canaan, God wanted to reinitiate the covenant of circumcision.

Q3. What did the man with a sword say to Joshua?

“I am the commander of the Lord’s army, remove your sandals, for the place you stand is holy.” The Canaanite conquest is God’s war. Anyone who participate this war should humble himself and follow God’s direction.

Circumcision again, kept Passover. They crossed the Jordan and entered the land of Canaan on the tenth day of the first month. After circumcision, they kept the Passover at fourteenth day of the month. On the Passover night they came out of Egypt. And the Passover date, they entered Canaan.

Some of them were not circumcised. Some of them were circumcised in Egypt done by their father generation who had disobeyed God to enter Canaan. Therefore, their circumcision is not valid for the land of Canaan. That’s why the whole congregation needed to be circumcised again.

I am the commander of the Lord’s army. Remove your sandal from your feet, because the place where you stand is holy. -> “The Canaanite conquest is God’s holy war. Humble and consecrate yourself to join God’s holy war.”

Soldiers – Priests’ horns – the Ark – soldiers

Q2. How many times does Chapter 6 say that the priests with the horns and the ark should march around Jericho?

more than four times (v4, v6, v8, v13). This parade illustrates that the Canaanite conquest is God’s marching into the land of Canaa. As they marched arouund Jericho 13 times, they should not speak any but would hear the souund of the horns. This reminded them of their wilderness life that they had followed God’s guidance. The blowing of the horns meant start or stop of their moving.

Q3. How many times did they marched around the city until it collapsed?

Thirteen

Q4. Why should they not take any items from Jericho? (v17-19)

The city and all that is in it was set apart for the Lord. The Canaanite nations were subject to God’s judgment for their sins. Jericho was the first city in the land and was supposed to be totally destroyed. Anyone who takes the things that are destined to destruction will be destroyed along with the things he took. Thought this command, God wanted them to know the Canaanite conquest is God’s punishment against the Canaanite nations. As they entered the land of prosperity, they should be warned not to abandon’s God’s words in front of the temptation of wealth.

Q5. It was Rahab who hid the spies, not her family. But her family also were saved because of Rahab. Find verses alluding they were saved because of Rahab.

v22, v23, v25. The Jericho narrative has two main parts. The ark of the Lord circles the wall. Salvation of Rahab and her family amid total destruction. V22-23: Salvation of Rahab, v24: total destruction, v25: salvation of Rahab.

Q6. What is Joshua’s curse on those who would build a city on Jericho?

“He will lose his firstborn son who lays its foundations and his youngest son when he erects it gates.” Joshua wanted the place to remain as a ruin to warn the Israelites of God’s punishment when they serve other gods in the love of wealth. But their descendants were tampted to rebuild Jericho because the land was fertile and its location was good for trade. At the time of Ahab, the king of Northenr Israel, Jericho was rebuilt and Joshua’s curse came true (1 Kings 16:34)

CH 7: Achan Sins and is Punished

He was confident that he could win after he heard the spies’ report.

Q3. What is the argument of Joshua’s prayer? (you can put it in two sentences. v7-9)

a robe from Babylon, 200 silver pieces, a gold bar of 50 shekels.

Q6. How did God’s anger subside?

By stoning Achan and his family and burning his possesion. Is God unfair and harsh? We should remember that all humans are dsetined to die because of sin. Sooner or later, we will die. If you are alive now, God is postponing you punishment. It is God’s grace. Though Achan sinned, if he repented from his heart, he might be saved by God’s grace. In OT, pumishment didn’t mean eternal condemnation. When a person’s name is cut off from Isreal, it is a serious situation.

Q3. What is the order of these five incidents? (sword, Fire, Turning back, ambush attack, panic)

Sword, ambush attack, fire, panic of Ai soldiers, turning back to attack Ai soldiers. God knew what time they needed to attack Ai from their ambush. God had not told He would sign them when to turn back. Maybe Joshua worried about when to attack Ai and turn back. However, as they followed God’s direction in faith, He helped them in a proper time.

It is a ceremony to renew the covenant with God. They offered a burnt offering and peace offering and read aloud the terms of the covenant, blessings and curses. The covenantal curse was put on Jesus’ body and the new covenant was set up by His blood
