CH 1: Judah takes the lead & Partial Success

Q1. How does v1-3 show that they were hesitating to attack the Canaanites?

All three verses say that they were reluctant to go the battle. 1) They were supposed to attack the Canaanites without asking. 2)God promised them to drive out the Canaanites. 3) However, Judah asked Simeon to go together.

Q2. v4-13 explained how much success Judah made in their campaign. Find the verses telling their enemies were great and the verses telling God brought them the victory.

Seven (7) times. The bible doesn’t say, ‘they could not conquer,’ but ‘ they did not.’ It was the matter of their intention. They didn’t try to cast the Canaanites out. Finally, at v34, Danites were forced to live in the hill country. At the beignning of the spiritual battle, you can refuse it. It is on your hands. But, if you keep letting know without fighting the sin, later the sin will dominate you.

CH 2: Confrontation at Bokim & The Cycle of Sin-Repent in the Judges

Q1. An angel of the Lord appeared to them and said the Lord would not drive the remaining Canaanites out because of their obedience. Which commands of God did they not obey?

No agreement with the Canaanites. Tearing down their altars. They wept because the Lord said He would not drive the Canaanites out and they would be tempted by the Canaanites. Why did they cry? Misfortune ahead of them? Or falling away from the Lord. Bokim means “weeping ones.”

Q2. What would be the spiritual challenge for the new generation? (v7, 10)

Joshua and his generation who had experienced God died. V10 addresses this problem once again.

Q3. Please correct following statements according to the Bible

God was angry with them because they didn’t worship God

God handed them over to their enemies because God didn’t want to keep his promise.

In times of trouble, they repented and God sent their leaders.

God delivered them when they followed their leaders

As the cycle of sin-punishment-cry-salvation repeats, they started to return to God very slowly.


God was angry with them because they worshipped other gods. -> It is to abandon God

God handed them over to their enemies just as God had foretold. -> Still they were God’s people.

In times of trouble, they cried, and God sent their leaders. -> the Bible didn’t say they repented. They cried to God to get out of the suffering.

God delivered them when their leaders were alive. –> they didn’t obey their leaders. They needed a leader who doesn’t die.

As the cycle of sin-punishment-cry-salvation repeats, the next genration would again act more wickedly than the previous one. -> The author concluded this way, “they did not give up their practices or their stubborn ways.”

Q4. What would be God’s purpose as He puts us in a tough circumstance? (two, 2:21-23, 3:1-3)

To test us to see if we are careful to follow God’s words.

CH 3: Othniel: A Model Leader & Ehud: Assissination

Q1. As they forgot the Lord and worship the Baals and Asherahs, the Lord put them under Cushan Rishathaim for ( ) years. As they cried for help, God raised ( ) to deliver them. They had rest for ( ) years as Othniel was alive.

Eight, Othniel, 40, -> the land had shalom only when the Judge was alive. This Othniel was a model leader. And the following jusges would become less and less ideal.

Q2. They served ( ) the king of Moab for ( ) years. Ehud was the representative of the people who delivered ( ) to Eglon. He hid a ( ) long sword under his coat. He decieved Eglon as if he had a secret ( ) from God for Eglon. As Eglon stood up to listen, Ehud stabbed him and ran away. Eglon, 18, tribute payment, 18 inch, message, 10,000, 80. -> not quite ideal. Ehud lied to Eglon using God’s name.

CH 4: Deborah Summons Barak

Q1. “The Israelites ( ) did evil in the Lord’s sight after ( ). The Lord turned them over to King Jabin of Canaan, who ruled in ( ). The general of his army was ( ). Take 10,000 men from Naphtali and Zebulun and fight against Sisra. The Lord will give you victory.

Q3. Why did Deborah say that Barak would not get frame for this battle?

Barak didn’t trust in God and asked Deborah to go with him.

Q4. What made Sisra have confidence to flee to the tent of Jael?

King Jabin and the family of Heber had a peace treaty.

Q5. How did Jael kill Sisra?

She hammered the tent peg through Sisra’s temple. Didn’t she betray the peace treaty?

CH 5: Celebrating the Victory in Song

Q1. What is the reason of praise to God? (v7. 9) (hint: remember Barak’s words to Deborah in 4:8)

There were people who responded to the call to muster the army for the battle.

Q2. Name six tribes who praticipated the war and four tribes who didn’t come to the war. (v12-18)

CH 6: Gideon was Called

Q1. When they did evil in the Lord’s sight, the Lord handed them over to ( ) for seven years. What kind of evil did they do? When they cried out to the Lord. What was His response? (v1-10)

The Medianites, they disobey the Lord’s word, “do not worship the gods of the Amorites.” The Lord said to them, “I have delivered you from slavery and oppression and drove them our before you. I said not to worship their gods. But you disobeyed me”

Q2. From the passage that an angel of the Lord apperased to Gideon, we can find Gideon’s lack of faith and understanding about God. Find related verses that support following statements about Gideon’s thoughts.

V13, v17, v22, v15

The Lord’s encouragments: Lord hasn’t abondoned them. Why do we know? The Lord is sending Gideon now (v14). Show him a miracle (v21), The Lord revelaed him the Lord of shalom. The Lord doesn’t intend to harm us (v23-24). If they presumpteously appraoched God, God punished them. However, when God came to them, it was not to harm them.

God promised Gideon that He would be with him (v16)

Q3. What was the first command from the Lord?

Offer sacrifice offerings with two bulls on the cut down wood from Baal and Asherah poles. He did this in night.

Q4. Why could Gideon be saved from angry neighbhors and relatives? What was another name of Gideon?

His father defended him saying, “If Baal really is a god, let him fitht his won battles!” Jerub Baal became another name of Gideon.

Q5. When the Lord’s spirit encouraged Gideon to muster the army against the Medianites, Gideon asked twice God of the confirmation sign of victory. What was the sign he asked? What verses allure his lack of faith?

Dew only on the fleece, and the opposite next day.

God said, “Deliver Israel. Have I not sent you?” in verse 14. And Gideon knew it was God’s promise as he said in verse 36. But he asked confirmation sign from God. Gracious God answered to this request. But this doesn’t commend Gideon’s attitude as something we should follow. Later days, he made a golden epod which became an idol. He was replying on visible signs rather than God’s promise.

CH 7: God Reduced the Rank & Gideon’s Victory

Q1. Why did God ask Gideon to reduce the army to 300?

Not to make Israel brag about the victory. The way how they drank water doesn’t affect the Lord’s decision who will go. This is an over interpretation which is not meant from the text. God only choose a small number of soldiers.

Q2. Gideon was a man of doubt. Before the attack, how did God assure Gideon of victory?

God asked Gideon to go down to over hear what the Mediannites’ dream.

Q3. What did they shout when Gideon signaled?

“For the Lord and for Gideon”

CH 8: Gideon Appeases the Ephraimites & His Faults

Q1. Why were the Ephramites angry at Gideon? How did Gideon appease them?

Gideon didn’t call them to the battle. Giden said to them, “Ephraimites did more than Gideon’s army.”

Q2. When Gideon was chasing the Midianites, the people of two towns didn’t provide food to the army. What are the names of the towns? (find in the map) Why did they not support Gideon?

Sukkoth and Penuel. They were not sure if Gideon and his army would defeat the Midianites. They didn’t trust God’s power that was with Gideon and feared of the retaliation of the Midianites in case Giideon failed to destroy his enemies. Remember that Gideon’s army was 300 while the Midiannites were 15,000 who were survivied.

Q3. Gideon captured the two kings of Midianites, Zeba and Zalmunna, can returned to the two towns who had rejected to help Gideon and punished them. How?

He punished the leaders of Sukkoth with thorns and briers. He tore down the tower of Penuel and executed some of them. Here, we see that Gideon’s sword is against the fellow Israelites. Though Sukkoth and Penuel’s people did wrong, Gideon did far more that he could do.

Q4. What was Gideon’s fault?

He made a golden ephod. This became an object of worship and a snare to Gideon.

Q5. How many sons did Gideon have?

Seventy + one. Though he himself didn’t claim a king, he habved like a king of pagan nations. He made a golden ephod as a symbol of his leadership and power. He had many wives. Abimelech means, ‘my father is king.’

CH 9: Abimelech: Wicked leader

Q1. Who provided Abimelech money to hire some lawless men to follow him? Then, what did he do?

People of Shechem gave him 70 silver shekels. Shechem was his mother’s relatives. He killed 69 brothers.

Q2. In the Jotham’s parable, why the three trees didn’t want to be a king?

They valued their calling and duties given by God. However, thornbush was only uusufel for fire and wanted to be a king.

Q3. What would be the consequence of their choosing Abimelech as their king? (v20)

Both will be destroyed by each other. This is what you would get if you worship other things in the world as you king.

Q4. Why did God put hostility between Shechem’s people and Abimelech?

Because they helped Abimelech to kill seventy sone of Gideon.

Q5. Why did Shechem abandoned Abimelech and followed Gaal, son of Ebed? (v28)

Shechemites were descendants of Hamor, a Canaanites. They were not Isrealites. At the time of betraying Gideon’s sons, they choose Abilemech for he was closer to them. Now, Gaal is their pure blood, and they followed Gaal. The same reason they had chosen Abimelech, they abaondoned him.

Q6. What did Abimelech do to Shechem and the Tower of Shechem? (v44-49)

He destroyed Shechem as Joshua had done to the Canaanite cities. This Abimelech destroyed own people, not his enemies. Internal disaster came.

Q7. How was Abimelech was killed?

A woman on the tower of Thebez threw a millstone down on him. God repaid what he had done to Shechem. Jotham’s curse was fulfilled.

CH 10: Stability Restored

Q1. After the death of Abimelech, how many years did they have peace? (v1-5, during the two judges)

Forty five yrs

Q2. When they cried for help, what was God’s response? (v11-16)

Go and cry for help to the gods you have chosen!. However, when the Israelites begged for help humbly, God saved them.

CH 11: Jephthah: An Outcast Becomes a General & the Foolish spell

Q1. Why did Jephthah left his father’s house and lived in the land of Tob?

His half-brothers kicked him out

Q2. The leaders of Gilead came to Jephthah and asked him to be the army commander to fight the Ammonites. What was Jephthah’s requirement? (v9-11)

He wanted to be their leader if God helps him to defeat the Ammonites

Q3. What land did the Ammonite king request from the Israelites? Can you mark on the map? (hint: find three rivers mentioned in v13)

They asked the land from Arnon River to Jabbok River.

Q4. What was Jephthah’s response to this request? (four points. V17-19, v20-22, v23-25, v26)

V17-19: Our anscesters didn’t plan to take the land, but only to pass through

V20-22: but the king Sihon attacked us and the Lord God gave his land to us

V23-25: We have the right to have our God has given us. No one could take it from us.

V26: We lived here for 300 years. Why did you not claim during that time?

Q5. What was Jephthah’s vow?

To offer anyone who first welcomes him

Q6. Why do you think he made the vow?

He seem had tried to pressure God to helpe him. He views a relationship as a trade deal.

CH 12: Civil Strife Mars the Victory

Q1. Why did the Ephraimtes complain to Jephthah?

They complained that Jephthah didn’t call them to the war. Why did they want to join the battle? Maybe for their pride or wealthy plunder.

Q2. What did Jephthah do to the Ephraimites?

He waged a war against the fellow Israelites. He even tried to anihilate the Ephraimites. Compare with Gideon when the same Ephraimites had complained.

Q3. Why do you think the author mentioned number of children the judges had?

Though they were not kings, but behaved like kings. They had many wives. This shows pagan influence in the Israelite society.

CH 13: Samson’s Birth

Q1. What are the message of the angel to Manoah’s wife? (four points)

You will have a son.

Be ritually clean.

Don’t cut his hair

He will deliver Israel

Q2. The angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah’s wife, not to Manoah. When he heard it from his wife, he wanted to meet the angel directly. Verses 8 – 23 show Manoah’s spiritual blindness and lack of faith. Which sentence desribes Manoah’a mind that was found for each section? Connect properly.

V 8 – 10: “I cannot trust that a man of God came to you” That’s why he wanted the angel come again

V 11 – 14: “I need to verify the message by myself” His wife already told him of what the angel had said. The angel didn’t repeat what he said to his wife about how to raise the boy. Instead, he repeated what she needed to do.

V 15 – 16: Spiritual blindness. He didn’t recognize he was an angel of the Lord. The Bible mentioned it especially in v16, v21.

V 17 – 18: Vain curiosity. Manoah asked the name of the angel. But it was not given to him because he could not comprehend it. Here, we can find why he wanted to meet the angel directly. It was not to keep his words better, but to fulfill his curiosity.

V 22 – 23: “God wants to punish us.” This tells Manoah’s ignorace about God. He didn’t know God’s true heart and intention.

CH 14: Samson’s Unconsummated Marriage

Q1. Why did Samson insist to marry a Philistine girl? (v3,4)

He wanted so. “She is the right one for me.” The Lord allowed it. Pagan marriage was not God’s will. But, as Smason wanted it, God let it happen and used it to deliver Israel.

Out of the strong came something sweet (MeAZ YaCha MaTok)

CH 16: Samson’s Downfall. He opened his eyes in his blindness.

Samson slept with a prostitute. In the middle of night, he woke up and took off the city gate and went to Hebron, which is 40 miles away.

Q2. Three Philistine women were involved with Samson. However, with only one woman the Bible describes Samson fell in love with her and her name was given to us. What was her name? What was her role?

Delilah. Hebrew word for night is Lilah. She was to trick Samson to know the secret of his power.

His hair was shaved -> the Lord departed him

After his hair was shaved and his eyes were gouged out, he realized the power comes from God. He was dedicated until his death. And he humbly sought God’s power.

CH 17: Micah makes his own religion

Q1. Why did Micah confess he had stolen the silver?

In fear of the curse. He knew that the curse by the Lord’s name worked.

Q2. They made an image and an ephod, priest’s clothing, and hired a priest. This imitated the Lord’s tabernacle and the priesthood. However, one thing was missing. What is it?

The ark of covenant

Q3. Why did the Levite depart Bethlehem? Why did he agree to work for Micah? (the same reason) (v9-11)

He could not get support from the people in Bethlehem. Micah provided shelter and food. The Israelites were supposed to support the Levites. But they didn’t. The Levites forsook their mission and went for living.

Q4. What is the purpose of Micah’s doing all these? (v3, v12)

He wanted God’s blessings through the act of violating God’s commands.

CH 18: The Tribe of Dan finds an inheritance

Q1. Summarize the story of chapter 18

V1- 2: The Danites didn’t have the land to live and sent spies to find a land.

V3- 6: They came to Micah’s house, inquired God of their fortune, and got a postitive answer from the priest.

V7-10: They found a good place, quiet and peaceful, and persuaded the whole tribe to move up there.

V11-20: 600 fully armed Danites came to Micah’s house on the road to the new place and captured the idol and the priest of Micah’s shrine.

V21-26: Micah was powerless before the Danites

V27-31: They captured the city, settled down there, and worshiped the idol.

Q2. What were wrong in their capturing the city to reside? (hint: regarding God’s inheritance and the way they capture the city)

Their lands were the cities occupied by the Philistines that time. Laish was not a part of their inheritance. It was not in the list of Danite territory (Joh 19:40- 46). Also, when they capture any town out of the promised land, they should offer an option of peaceful submission for them. But, they didn’t.

Q3. Why was it bad that they had their own shrine? (two things. v30-31)

They served a carved image

They worshipped not in the authorized place, Shiloh.

Q4. The name of the young Levite was hidden until the last scene. What was wrong this this Levite? (v20, v31)

He misled the people, for his own satisfaction.

CH 19: Sodom and Gomorrah Revisited

Q1. A levite’s concubine got angry and returned to her father’s house in ( ). Four months later, he came to her father’s house to bring her back. His father-in-law welcomed him and persuaded him to stay for ( ) days. Finally, he departed late afternoon on the last day of his delay. As they approached ( ), he didn’t want to stay there because it was a Canaanite city. Instead he wanted to lodge in ( ), a Benjaminate town. No one invited them until an old man from ( ) welcomed them into his house. In the middle of the night, some of towns men came and asked for them for the physical relationship.

“Why do you do this thing? Take my two daughters and this man’s concubine” Both are very similar.

V25: Took her concubine out

V26-28: Next morning, he fouund her dead and brought her back home.

V29-30: cut her body in 12 peaices and sent them to all Israel.

CH 20: Civil War Breaks Out

Q1. What was not accurate in the Levite’s accusation against the people of Gibeah?

He pretended he was an innocent victim. In fact, he was also unrighteous.

Q2. Fill out the table that summarizes the three battles

The Lord wanted to punish the all other tribes first before He punishes the Benjaminites. For all tribes have sinned before the Lord.

Q1. Why did they cry at Mizpah?

The tribe of Benjamin almost disappeared.

Q2. How did they get 400 brides?

They destroyed Jabesh Gilead and captured 400 women. See how they resoved the problem.

Q3. How did they get 200 brides?

They kidnapped 200 women from the feast of Shiloh.

Q4. They were bound to their two oaths which were not wise. What were the two oaths?

– whoever does not come before the Lord at Mizpah will be executed

– They must not give their daughters as wives to the remaining Benjaminites

Their hasty oath from pride bound themselves. However, they found a way around to find wives for the Benjaminites. Self-righteousness disclosed their hypocrisy.

Q5. The author of Judges concluded this way. “In those days Israel had no king. Each man did what he considered to be right” (v25). Find other verses that are similar to this. (From chapter 17, 18, 19. Three verses)
